With the scope of the damage of Hurricane Harvey, and more rain still to come, the effects will be felt for a long time. Here are some of the best ways that we can help our neighbors from here in the Austin area.
1. Donate money
One of the biggest needs for the organizations on the ground helping evacuees is financial support to pay for their operations and staff.
- Mayor Adler has asked everyone who is able to donate $10 to the Red Cross by texting RED CROSS to 90999.
- Austin Pets Alive has taken in over 235 animals from shelters in the path of Harvey, and their current biggest need is donations.
- Give to local food banks: Houston Food Bank, Galveston County Food Bank, and Corpus Christi Food Bank are a few.
- Support the Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group.
2. Donate space
You can offer to share your space at no cost to evacuees and emergency responders through Airbnb. Never been a host before? You can sign up as a first-timer.
3. Donate blood
If you can safely travel to San Antonio or New Braunfels, the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center urgently needs blood donations, especially O positive and O negative.
4. Donate time
5. Share information
Our YNPN Austin member base has a wealth of information, so please use the comments to share any other ideas and needs you know of, and please share this post with others who want to help.
