Aquatics Coordinator (TownLake) - YMCA of Austin

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Safety Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and safety of the pools. This individual will be responsible for the development of lifeguards and head lifeguards to ensure safety of all members.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Safety Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and safety of the pools. This individual will be responsible for the development of lifeguards and head lifeguards to ensure safety of all members. This person will further ensure that all YMCA standards are being met and/or exceeded as they relate to membership development. This position works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.

Education & Training:

  • Must have a current Lifeguard certification
  • Bachelor degree from a 4 year college or university is preferred
  • Obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification within 90 days of hire
  • Obtain YMCA and Red Cross Lifeguard certifications within 90 days of hire Obtain YMCA and Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification within 6 months of hire

Experience:

  • Previous aquatics experience required.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Interested in contributing to the mission, voice and culture of the YMCA of Austin.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and Outlook and ability to quickly learn other software programs
  • Able to multi-task and assume responsibility for accuracy and timeliness of work product

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The member relations aspect of this position requires that relationship building is a top priority at all times. The Aquatics Safety Coordinator must attend to the needs, and requests of health seekers, members, and all people associated with the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner, using the Y voice.

Leadership

  • Create a positive and motivational environment for lifeguard staff
  • Complete daily Lifeguard quick check report
  • Provide leadership and coaching to lifeguard team
  • Lead monthly lifeguard in-service training along with Aquatics Director Serve as a Cause Driven Leader on Duty according to branch schedule, and complete CDL report
  • Respond to member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner utilizing written and verbal communication, including phone and face-to-face
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule to ensure regular exposure to members and staff at all times throughout the week, including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends
  • Administrative Support Create staffing schedule for lifeguards on When I Work web site, ensuring staff work within required limit of hours (28 hours/week yearly staff and 40 hours/week for seasonal)
  • Schedules and manage lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certification classes
  • Update pool availability on the google calendar, web site and mobile app at all times
  • Schedule contract groups and ensure adequate lifeguard coverage upon approval of the Aquatics Director
  • Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations
  • Document and track chemical levels in all pools and ensure proper maintenance and action is taken to avoid pool closures
  • Compiles monthly program statistics to monitor participation usage of the pool
  • Recruit potential employees to fill lifeguard classes
  • Inventory and order chemicals and pool supplies as needed Communication / Mission Advancement / Strategic Promote and incorporate the YMCA three areas of focus and the Y’s Cause and Culture
  • Lead a team for Annual Campaign efforts for staff and members
  • Actively and enthusiastically support the branch and association goals and directions through effective completion of tasks and verbal display to peers, staff, members and guests

People Management

  • Administer swim test to all potential new hire lifeguards
  • Train, develop, and support lifeguard staff
  • Administer monthly drop drills to prepare staff in lifeguard readiness
  • Monitor and update all required staff certifications, scheduling and facility needs
  • Work with Aquatics Director to develop head lifeguard program to include a training plan and other development opportunities for lifeguards
  • Ensure staff is well informed and connected to the branch
  • Address complaints and uses conflict resolution techniques to solve staff problems
  • Audit staff to ensure staff readiness and lifeguard vigilance
  • Work with branch director team to offer CPR/First Aid/O2 training for branch staff
  • Fiscal Management Ensure lifeguard staffing schedule is within budget while ensuring safety of all members
  • Ensure supplies ordered are within budget

Facilities / Risk Management

  • Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, and YMCA health and safety regulations
  • Conduct and ensure proper maintenance of pools including accurate recordkeeping of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Lead the lifeguard team to ensure pool deck and natatorium areas are always clean and well maintained
  • Ensure certification for all lifeguards are on file in the Aquatics Office
  • Ensure all SDS are current and on file in the Aquatics Office
  • Perform lifeguard and swim instructor duties as required

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the staff member must be able to sustain long periods of active work.
  • Ability to conduct one-on-one training, small or large group classes and activities that last up to an hour or so in duration.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including sitting, talking, typing on a computer, leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting weights or objects of 50-75lbs. safely. (I.E. weights, some light machinery within the fitness center, etc.).

SALARY: The salary range for this position is $14.00 to $17.00 per hour, depending on experience and a full benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage plus employer-matched retirement upon eligibility.
